Introduction

TBM disc cutters are key excavation tools installed on the cutterhead of tunnel boring machines. During tunnelling operations, disc cutters withstand high impact loads, continuous wear and complex geological conditions.

TBM Disc Cutter Structure

A complete TBM disc cutter consists of several precision components, including cutter ring, cutter hub, bearing assemblycutter shaft and sealing system. Each component plays an important role in ensuring efficient rock breaking and reliable operation.

1. Cutter Ring – Rock Breaking Component

The cutter ring is the only component directly contacting the rock. It penetrates the rock surface and creates fractures through rolling and pressure.

Key performance factors:

•  Wear resistance:determines service life under abrasive rock conditions.

•  Hardness:affects cutting efficiency and wear performance.

•  Toughness:prevents cracking under impact loads.

2. Cutter Hub – Structural Support

The cutter hub supports the cutter ring and houses the internal bearing and sealing components. It transfers excavation loads from the cutter ring through the bearing assembly to the shaft while maintaining structural stability.

3. Bearing Assembly – Supporting Smooth Rotation

The bearing assembly, typically consisting of two tapered roller bearings and related spacer and positioning components, allows the cutter hub and cutter ring to rotate smoothly around the shaft under heavy excavation loads. A reliable bearing assembly reduces friction, controls internal clearance and helps prevent abnormal wear.

4. Sealing System – Protecting Internal Components

The sealing system, including the floating seals and their supporting installation structures, prevents water, soil particles and abrasive contaminants from entering the cutter assembly while retaining lubricant inside. Seal failure may lead to lubricant leakage, bearing damage and rotation failure.

5. Cutter Shaft – Load Transfer Component

The cutter shaft is fixed in the cutter seat and supports the rotating cutter hub through the bearing assembly. It transfers radial, axial and impact loads from the cutter to the cutterhead structure.

Load Transfer Path

During excavation, the cutting force generated between the cutter ring and rock is transferred through the cutter assembly:

Why Component Quality Matters

A TBM disc cutter is a complete engineering system in which every component works together to achieve reliable excavation performance. The failure of any single component, such as the cutter ring, bearing, or sealing system, may affect cutter rotation, increase wear, and lead to unplanned downtime.

High-quality components are essential for maintaining stable cutter performance under challenging tunnelling conditions. Key factors that influence disc cutter reliability include:

•  Material performance – Proper material selection and heat treatment improve wear resistance and impact resistance of critical components.

•  Manufacturing accuracy – Precise machining and assembly ensure proper fitting and stable operation.

•  Bearing and sealing reliability – A reliable bearing and sealing system protects internal components and extends service life.

•  Component compatibility – All parts must work together as a complete system to achieve optimal performance.

For TBM projects, selecting suitable disc cutters is not only about the initial product cost. Cutter reliability directly affects excavation efficiency, maintenance requirements, and overall project operation costs.
